Understanding Investment Irreversibility in General Equilibrium

چکیده

In general equilibrium, irreversibility a ects both the wealth of consumers and the return on assets. As long as the inter-temporal elasticity of substitution is realistically low, irreversibility not only prevents capital destruction, but it also induces capital creation. Furthermore, under certain conditions, irreversibility raises the risk premium by increasing the variability of consumption and market portfolio. These issues are dealt in a simple model of investment irreversibility with multiple types of capital. Its tractability allows for analytical results which explain the contrast, emphasized in the extant literature, between the consequences of irreversibility for individual markets and the consequences of irreversibility for the whole economy. An Equilibrium Model of Irreversible Investment

This paper presents a general equilibrium model of a two-sector production economy with irreversible real investment. Irreversibility of investment is the most prominent feature of the productive sector. It restricts capital accumulation, affecting firms’ investment decisions, which in turn determine properties of asset prices. Thus, this model provides a framework for connecting stock returns ...

Corporate Tax Policy and Long-Run Capital Formation: The Role of Irreversibility and Fixed Costs

This paper presents an analytically tractable continuous-time general equilibrium model with investment irreversibility and fixed adjustment costs. In the model, there is a continuum of firms that are subject to idiosyncratic shocks to capital. Although the presence of investment frictions lowers consumer welfare, it may raise or reduce the long-run average capital stock, depending on the degre...

A Note on Competitive Investment under Uncertainty by

This paper clarifies how uncertainty affects irreversible investment in a competitive market equilibrium. With free entry, irreversibility affects the distribution of future prices, and thereby creates an opportunity cost of investing now rather than waiting. As with an imperfectly competitive firm, uncertainty can also increase the value of a marginal unit of capital. I show that with an infin...

Putty-Clay and Investment: A Business Cycle Analysis

This paper develops a general equilibrium model with putty-clay technology, investment irreversibility, and variable capacity utilization. Low short-run capital-labor substitutability induces the putty-clay effect of a tight link between changes in capacity and movements in employment and output. Permanent shocks to technology or factor prices generate a hump-shaped response of hours, persisten...

Asset Prices and Real Investment

This paper analyzes the links between the firms investment technology and financial asset prices within a general equilibrium production economy. The model assumes that real investment is irreversible and subject to convex adjustment costs. It shows how these basic features of real investment naturally generate rich dynamics of stock returns. Firm investment activity and firm characteristics, p...
